What Is the Medical Service Bond?
A medical service bond is a legal agreement signed at the time of admission by a government MBBS student and a guarantor (usually a parent). The student agrees to serve as a medical officer in a government health facility within the state for a defined period after completing internship. In return, the state provides heavily subsidised education. If the student fails to fulfil the bond service, a financial penalty must be paid to the state government.
Bond Requirements by NE State (2026)
| State | Bond Amount (Approx.) | Service Period | Service Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assam | ₹40 lakh – ₹60 lakh | 3 years | Rural or CHC or PHC in Assam |
| Manipur | ₹40 lakh | 3 years | Government hospital in Manipur |
| Tripura | ₹30 lakh – ₹40 lakh | 2–3 years | Government facility in Tripura |
| Arunachal Pradesh | ₹25 lakh – ₹40 lakh | 3 years | Government hospital in AP |
| Mizoram | ₹25 lakh | 2–3 years | Government health centre in Mizoram |
| RIMS Imphal (AIQ seats) | No state bond | — | Not applicable |
| NEIGRIHMS Shillong | No bond | — | Central institution, no bond |
Bond amounts change — verify before signing
Bond amounts are revised periodically. Always confirm the exact current bond amount with the DME at the time of 2026 counselling. Some states have increased penalties significantly in recent years to discourage migration of government-trained doctors.
Consequences of Breaking the Bond
If a doctor fails to report for bond service or leaves before completing the mandatory period, the state DME initiates recovery proceedings. The bond amount is treated as a government due and can be recovered through legal channels. The guarantor may also be pursued. Breaking a bond is a civil financial obligation — it does not prevent future private sector employment or employment in other states. However, outstanding bond dues may complicate government employment applications within the same state.
Bond and PG Admissions
This is the question most MBBS students ask: can I appear for NEET-PG while under a bond? Most NE states allow you to sit for NEET-PG during bond service. However, some states require bond completion or payment before you can join a PG course. A few states grant bond relaxation for in-service candidates who secure PG seats in state government institutions. Read the exact bond agreement wording carefully before signing — the terms vary between states and between admission years.
Bond Service as a Career Asset
Bond service is not necessarily a career setback. Three years in a district hospital or community health centre builds emergency, general medicine and surgical-assist skills that are invaluable. Many doctors who completed bond service describe it as formative. Plan your NEET-PG preparation around the bond years and you can emerge with both the bond fulfilled and a competitive MD/MS admission.
