What is MBBS?

MBBS is India's primary undergraduate medical degree, awarding the right to practise modern (allopathic) medicine and surgery. The degree covers pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical disciplines over nine semesters, followed by a compulsory rotating internship. An MBBS graduate is eligible for government medical service, private practice, and further specialisation through MD or MS.

Eligibility to register as a medical practitioner with the National Medical Commission. Eligibility for NEET PG for MD/MS admission.

Eligibility at a Glance

Requirements as per National Medical Commission and NTA guidelines. Always verify with the official prospectus.

Minimum 50th percentile (General / EWS). 40th percentile (SC / ST / OBC). 45th percentile (General-PWD).

Category eligibility (SC / ST / OBC / EWS / PWD) is verified by the counselling authority based on domicile state. NE state students should confirm category certificates are state-issued.

Admission Pathways

Multiple routes exist. North-East students often qualify for state quota and special category seats — check each pathway carefully.

All India Quota (AIQ)

15% of all government MBBS seats nationally

Verified

15% of government MBBS seats in all states are pooled under AIQ and allotted by MCC through centralised online counselling. Open to students of any state. Highly competitive — top scorers from across India compete for these seats.

NE Advantage: NE students can target premier government colleges across India through AIQ, including colleges in states with lower cutoffs. AIQ counselling also covers GMCH Guwahati and RIMS Imphal seats, giving NE domicile students the option to secure a home-state government seat through centralised counselling.

State Quota — NE State Counselling

85% of government MBBS seats in each NE state

Verified

85% of government MBBS seats in each NE state are reserved for domicile students and allotted through the respective State DME counselling. Assam's DME conducts counselling for GMCH Guwahati, AMC Dibrugarh and other government colleges. Other NE states have their own DME processes.

NE Advantage: Domicile students from NE states compete only against other domicile candidates for state quota seats — not against the full national NEET pool. NE state government MBBS seats at GMCH Guwahati, RIMS Imphal, NEIGRIHMS Shillong and other colleges are strongly preferred by NE students for proximity and lower fees.

Management Quota

Typically 50% of private college MBBS seats

Verified

Private medical colleges across open states offer MBBS seats through Management Quota — a separate, FRC-regulated fee category within the same centralized counselling as government quota seats (the state counselling authority, or the MCC for Deemed Universities), not an independent college-run process. No agent is required or legitimate; any agent claiming to "arrange" a seat outside counselling is either describing something not legally valid or operating fraudulently.

NE Advantage: NE students are eligible for Management Quota admissions at private colleges in Karnataka, Telangana, UP, Haryana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and more open states. Many NE families find Karnataka and Telangana colleges accessible given the established NE student communities in Bangalore and Hyderabad.

NRI Quota

Typically 15% of private college MBBS seats

Reviewed

A separate seat matrix reserved for NRI-sponsored students at private medical colleges. The student does not need to be an NRI — a qualifying close relative (parent or sibling) who is NRI/OCI is sufficient. Higher fees than Management Quota, but separate from Management Quota competition.

NE Advantage: Many NE families have relatives abroad who qualify as NRI sponsors. Students whose close relatives are NRI/OCI should check NRI Quota eligibility before pursuing Management Quota at private colleges.

NRI Quota eligibility and fee structures vary by college and state. Always verify the specific college policy.

Open State Counselling

Varies by state and institution

Reviewed

NE students are eligible to appear in Management Quota admissions at private colleges in Karnataka, Telangana, UP, Haryana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and other open states. Each state has different fee regulation frameworks and counselling bodies.

NE Advantage: Karnataka and Telangana are the most commonly chosen open states for NE students — large NE student communities already present, COMEDK and other counselling processes are well-documented, and the fee structures for Management Quota are generally more predictable.

Career Scope

What you can do after completing MBBS.

Government Medical Service

MBBS graduates are eligible for Grade 1 / Grade 2 Medical Officer posts across state and central government. Assam, Meghalaya and other NE states regularly recruit MBBS doctors for CHCs and PHCs. Competitive pay scale with rural and tribal area allowances.

Private Practice

An MBBS doctor is legally qualified to practise general medicine, conduct deliveries, manage outpatient cases and operate a clinic. General practice is the entry point — specialisation follows PG.

Postgraduate Specialisation (MD / MS)

After 1 year of internship, an MBBS graduate is eligible to appear for NEET PG. MD and MS programs open across government and private colleges. Specialisations in demand for NE: General Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics, Anaesthesia, Orthopaedics.

Teaching and Academics

MBBS is the minimum qualification for admission tutors at medical colleges. After MD/MS, teaching roles at the lecturer/assistant professor level become available.

International Practice

MBBS graduates can appear for USMLE (US), PLAB (UK), AMC (Australia) and similar licensing exams for international medical practice. FMGE/NExT is required for graduates of foreign medical institutions practising in India.
