Admission Pathways

Multiple routes exist. North-East students often qualify for state quota and special category seats — check each pathway carefully.

MCC MDS Counselling

AIQ seats in government dental colleges nationally

Verified

MCC conducts centralised counselling for MDS seats in government dental colleges under AIQ. Open to BDS graduates from any state who qualify NEET MDS. Government MDS seats are highly competitive nationally.

NE Advantage: NE BDS graduates compete through the national AIQ pool for government MDS seats. The number of government MDS seats nationally is limited, making competitive NEET MDS scores critical for government seat access.

State Quota — MDS

State quota seats in NE government dental colleges

Reviewed

States with government dental colleges may conduct separate state MDS counselling for domicile BDS graduates. Availability is limited in most NE states.

NE Advantage: Assam government dental college MDS seats (where available) are accessible through state MDS counselling for Assam domicile BDS graduates. Seat numbers are very limited.

Government MDS seat availability in NE India is very limited. Most NE BDS graduates pursuing MDS do so through AIQ or Management Quota at colleges in other states.

Management Quota — MDS

Typically 50% of private dental college MDS seats

Verified

Private dental colleges offering NDC-approved MDS programs allot seats through Management Quota, via the state counselling authority (or the MCC for Deemed Universities) alongside government quota seats — not by approaching the college directly. Fees are higher than government seats but lower than Management Quota MBBS PG.

NE Advantage: NE BDS graduates who do not secure government MDS seats through AIQ or state quota pursue Management Quota MDS at private dental colleges in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra or Telangana.

Career Scope

What you can do after completing MDS.

Specialist Dental Practice

An MDS degree enables specialist-level dental practice in the chosen discipline. Orthodontists, oral surgeons and prosthodontists command premium fees in private practice. In NE India, dental specialist services are severely undersupplied — MDS specialists who return to the region face very low competition.

Dental College Faculty

MDS is the minimum qualification for lecturer/assistant professor appointments at NDC-recognised dental colleges. Faculty positions carry defined pay scales and are a stable career path for those interested in teaching alongside clinical practice.

Government Specialist Dental Service

State governments and central services recruit MDS-qualified dentists as Senior Dental Officers for District Hospitals and Teaching Institutions. Pay scales are higher than BDS appointment levels.
