What is BDS?
BDS is India's primary undergraduate dental degree, awarding the right to practise dentistry. The five-year course covers basic sciences, pre-clinical dental training and clinical dentistry, followed by a one-year rotating internship. A BDS graduate is eligible for government dental service, private dental practice, and further specialisation through MDS.
Eligibility to register as a dental practitioner with the National Dental Commission (NDC). Eligibility for NEET MDS for further specialisation.

Admission Pathways
Multiple routes exist. North-East students often qualify for state quota and special category seats — check each pathway carefully.
All India Quota (AIQ) — BDS
15% of all government dental college seats nationally
15% of government dental college seats across India are pooled under AIQ and allotted by MCC. Open to students of any state through centralised counselling. Government BDS seats are limited nationally compared to MBBS.
NE Advantage: NE students compete through the full national AIQ pool. Cutoffs for BDS through AIQ are generally lower than MBBS, making BDS government seats through AIQ a realistic option for students with mid-range NEET scores.
State Quota — NE State Counselling
85% of government dental college seats in each NE state
Domicile-based BDS admissions in government dental colleges within each NE state, allotted by the state DME. Seat availability varies — not all NE states have government dental colleges.
NE Advantage: Assam has a Government Dental College in Guwahati with state quota seats. Students from Assam with a valid domicile certificate are eligible for state quota BDS admissions. Other NE states have very limited or no government dental college seats.
Government dental college availability in NE India is limited. Check the specific state DME for current seat availability.
Management Quota
Typically 50% of private dental college seats
Private dental colleges in open states like Karnataka, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu offer BDS seats through Management Quota at FRC-regulated fees, allotted via the state counselling authority (or the MCC for Deemed Universities) alongside government quota seats — not by applying directly to the college. Karnataka has the highest concentration of private dental colleges in India.
NE Advantage: NE students without state quota BDS options often pursue Management Quota BDS in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu or Maharashtra. The established NE student communities in Bangalore and Chennai make these states a practical choice.
NRI Quota
Typically 15% of private dental college seats
NRI-sponsored students can access BDS seats through the NRI Quota at most private dental colleges. A qualifying NRI relative (parent or sibling) is the key eligibility requirement.
NE Advantage: Many NE families with relatives abroad can access NRI Quota BDS seats. Higher fees than Management Quota but separate from Management Quota competition.

Career Scope
What you can do after completing BDS.
Government Dental Service
BDS graduates are eligible for Dental Officer posts in state government, armed forces, ESIC, railways and other central services. NE state governments regularly recruit dental officers for District Hospitals and CHCs.
Private Dental Practice
A BDS graduate can open a dental clinic or join an established practice. General dentistry — fillings, extractions, basic prosthetics, orthodontic referrals — is within BDS scope. Urban and semi-urban markets in NE India show increasing demand for dental services.
MDS Specialisation
After 1 year of internship, BDS graduates are eligible for NEET MDS. MDS is a 3-year program with specialisations including Orthodontics, Oral Surgery, Endodontics, Prosthodontics and Periodontics. Specialists command significantly higher earnings in private practice.
Teaching and Research
BDS is the minimum qualification for demonstrator/tutor posts in dental colleges. After MDS, lecturer and assistant professor positions become available at government and private dental colleges.
