About RIMS
Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal is a centrally-funded autonomous institution and one of the most important medical colleges in NE India. Established in 1972, RIMS is directly under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and operates as a premier teaching hospital for Manipur and the surrounding NE states.
RIMS is not a simple AIQ-only institution — as a regional institute serving the whole NE region, it reserves a dedicated block of seats for each NE state (in addition to Manipur's own quota), on top of the national AIQ pool. Per the institute's published annual intake, of 125 MBBS seats, 19 are AIQ (MCC counselling) and 106 are distributed across state-wise quotas: Manipur (30), Tripura (13), Meghalaya (13), Nagaland (10), Mizoram (7), Arunachal Pradesh (7), Sikkim (5), EWS (11) and NE Open (10). RIMS offers a large range of MD/MS specialties.

Key facts
Central government institution with dedicated seat quotas for every NE state
Established 1972; primary referral hospital for Manipur
MD/MS programs in 16+ specialties
125 MBBS seats (AY 2025-26) — 19 AIQ (MCC) plus state-wise quotas for all 7 NE states + Manipur
NE India perspective
RIMS is unique among NE central institutions — instead of pooling all seats into the national AIQ, it reserves a fixed number of seats for each individual NE state (Manipur 30, Tripura 13, Meghalaya 13, Nagaland 10, Mizoram 7, Arunachal Pradesh 7, Sikkim 5), so students from every NE state compete only against their own state's applicants for that state's block, not the whole country. This makes RIMS one of the most accessible central government MBBS options for NE students outside their home state. Only 19 of 125 seats are in the open national AIQ pool. RIMS MD/MS cutoffs in AIQ PG are also attainable for competitive NE MBBS graduates.
