About SMIMS

Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS) in Gangtok is a deemed university medical college — part of the Manipal Group. Established in 1995 and NMC-recognised, SMIMS is a notable exception to the usual "100% MCC deemed-university counselling" rule that applies to most deemed medical universities: under a long-standing arrangement with the Government of Sikkim, the large majority of MBBS seats are filled through Sikkim's own state counselling (conducted by the state's Human Resource Development Department), not MCC's deemed-university process. Of 150 MBBS seats, roughly 127 are in the Sikkim state-quota pool (which includes a dedicated NE-states category and Government of Sikkim-nominated seats) and roughly 23 are in the national AIQ pool filled by MCC. A smaller number of management and NRI quota seats exist within this structure — verify the exact current split via the SMIMS/Sikkim HRDD counselling notification each cycle.

SMIMS is the only medical college in Sikkim and serves as the primary teaching hospital for the state. Its Sikkim state quota includes an NE-category reservation, making it directly relevant for NE students beyond just Sikkim domicile candidates.

Key facts

  • Only medical college in Sikkim

  • Part of the established Manipal Group academic framework

  • NMC-recognised; NEET mandatory for admission

  • Exception among deemed universities — most seats go through Sikkim state counselling (HRDD), not MCC deemed-university counselling

  • 150 MBBS seats (AY 2025-26) — approx. 127 Sikkim state quota (incl. NE category), 23 AIQ

NE India perspective

SMIMS is the closest medical college to the NE region and, unusually for a deemed university, most of its seats are filled through Sikkim's state counselling rather than a pure management-quota process — including a dedicated NE-states category within the state quota. For NE students, this makes SMIMS more accessible than a typical deemed-university management quota seat. The Manipal Group's academic brand is well-established and internationally recognised, which is relevant for NE students considering international licensing exams post-MBBS.
