BAMS: Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery
BAMS is a 5.5-year degree (including one year of mandatory internship) regulated by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM). BAMS graduates can practise as registered medical practitioners under the Ayurvedic system. They are eligible to prescribe Ayurvedic medicines and, in several states, certain allopathic drugs for primary care settings under state-specific bridge course regulations. BAMS admission is through NEET-UG — the same examination as MBBS.
BDS: Bachelor of Dental Surgery
BDS is a 5-year degree (4 years academic + 1 year rotatory internship). Dental education and registration is now regulated by the National Dental Commission (NDC), which replaced the decades-old Dental Council of India (DCI) when the NDC Act came into force on 19 March 2026. BDS graduates are qualified dental surgeons who can practise independently. A BDS degree is the gateway to MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) via NEET-MDS. BDS is also admitted through NEET-UG 2026.
BAMS and BDS Colleges in NE India (2026)
| College | Program | State | Type | Approx Seats |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GDCH Guwahati | BDS | Assam | Government | 60 |
| Gauhati Ayurvedic College | BAMS | Assam | Government | 60 (approx) |
| Regional Ayurvedic College, Jorhat | BAMS | Assam | Government | 60 (approx) |
| Private dental colleges (Assam) | BDS | Assam | Private | Varies |
NE India has limited BAMS and BDS infrastructure compared to states like Karnataka, Maharashtra or Rajasthan. Assam has the most options in the region. Students who want BAMS or BDS and do not secure a seat in NE may need to consider other states — particularly Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh which have large government BAMS college networks.
NEET-UG 2026 Cut-off Comparison
| Program | Approx AIQ General Cut-off Rank (2026 Est.) | Approx Score Range |
|---|---|---|
| MBBS — top NE govt college (GMCH) | 50,000 – 65,000 | 520 – 560 |
| MBBS — smaller NE govt college | 90,000 – 1,30,000 | 460 – 510 |
| BDS — govt college (NE) | 2,00,000 – 4,00,000 | 350 – 420 |
| BAMS — govt college (NE or other state) | 3,00,000 – 6,00,000 | 300 – 380 |
Which Should You Choose?
MBBS remains the broadest pathway — PG options (MD/MS), highest earning potential, and widest scope of practice. Choose MBBS if your score qualifies
BDS is an excellent choice for scores in the 350–450 range who want a shorter path to independent specialist practice. MDS salaries in metros are competitive; dental clinic ownership is viable even in NE India
BAMS is a solid option for scores in the 300–400 range, particularly in states with strong Ayurveda infrastructure and for students interested in traditional medicine and holistic practice
Do not choose BAMS or BDS simply to avoid repeating — a repeat year for MBBS is worth it if your score is within 50–80 marks of MBBS cut-off
2026 strategy
If your NEET-UG 2026 score is between 350 and 430 and you did not secure MBBS anywhere, applying for BDS at GDCH Guwahati (government, very low fees) is a strong alternative. BDS from a government NE college costs under ₹2 lakh total in tuition — vastly cheaper than a private MBBS.
