Domicile requirements for Nagaland state quota
Nagaland state quota eligibility at NIMSR requires proof of permanent residence in Nagaland. Typical documents: birth certificate (Nagaland birth), Class 10/12 certificates from Nagaland-based schools, tribal certificate (for ST category, where applicable), and parental residence/employment proof in Nagaland. Verify the exact list in the current-year Nagaland DME/DHFW information brochure, since NIMSR's counselling process is still relatively new and documentation requirements may be refined year to year.
For students applying to other states' Management Quota or NRI Quota instead of (or in addition to) NIMSR state quota, no Nagaland domicile requirement applies — those admissions are open to all Indian students.
Overview
Nagaland now has its first and only government medical college: the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), near Dimapur, which received its NMC Letter of Permission in 2023 and offers 100 MBBS seats — 85 in the Nagaland state quota and 15 in AIQ. This ended the long-standing gap where Nagaland domicile students had no state-quota MBBS option at all.
Before NIMSR became operational, Nagaland students had to access medical education entirely through AIQ (national counselling) or Management Quota at private colleges in other states. That route is still available and remains important for students who don't secure one of NIMSR's limited state-quota seats, but Nagaland domicile students now also have a genuine home-state government pathway for the first time.
Always verify NIMSR's current-year seat matrix and NMC recognition status on the official NMC website and the Nagaland DME/DHFW portal before making admission decisions, as intake and recognition status can change with each MBBS batch NMC inspects.

NE perspective
NIMSR gives Nagaland domicile students a realistic home-state government MBBS pathway for the first time, with one of the smallest state-quota competition pools in the NE region. Students with mid-range NEET scores who previously had no state option now have a meaningful shot at a government seat close to home.
Nagaland students belonging to Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories recognised under the central government list also benefit from ST reservation in AIQ counselling — lower qualifying percentile and reserved seats in government colleges across India, on top of the NIMSR option. Geographically, Nagaland students also have proximity to RIMS Imphal (Manipur) and GMCH Guwahati (Assam), both accessible via AIQ. For Management Quota, Nagaland students commonly target Karnataka, Telangana and Assam.
