NRI Quota MBBS — Complete Guide

What is NRI Quota?

Under NMC regulations, private medical colleges are required to reserve 5% of their total MBBS intake for NRI (Non-Resident Indian) and OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) category students. This quota is separate from both state quota and management quota.

Unlike government college seats which require domicile for state quota, NRI quota seats in private colleges are open to any Indian student whose family has qualifying NRI/OCI ties — regardless of which state in India they are from.

For NE India students, this is particularly relevant because a significant number of NE families have members working abroad in the Gulf, Southeast Asia, UK or USA — and many don't realise this creates NRI quota eligibility for their children.

Important before you apply

  • • NEET score is still mandatory. The qualifying cutoff for NRI quota is lower than general category but NEET must be cleared.
  • • Documentary proof of NRI/OCI status is strictly verified. Only genuine connections qualify.
  • • Fees are significantly higher than management quota — budget carefully.
  • • Different colleges interpret NRI eligibility differently. Verify with each institution.
