NRI Quota Eligibility — Who Qualifies?

NRI quota eligibility is based on the NRI/OCI status of a sponsoring relative, not the student. Many NE families qualify without realising it.

Core eligibility criteria

NEET qualified

Student must have a valid NEET-UG score. There is no minimum score for NRI quota eligibility itself, but each college sets its own cutoff (usually very low compared to general).

Qualifying relative

Parent, grandparent, or the student themselves must hold NRI or OCI status at the time of admission.

Valid NRI/OCI documentation

The qualifying relative must hold valid foreign passport, work visa, or OCI card — the type varies. Passports alone are not sufficient; proof of NRI status is needed.

Indian citizenship (student)

The applicant student must be an Indian citizen. OCI card holders can also apply directly.

Which relations qualify?

RelationQualifies?Notes
Parent (father or mother) YesEither parent being NRI/OCI qualifies the student.
Grandparent (paternal or maternal) YesSome colleges accept grandparent NRI status — verify with specific institution.
Sibling (brother or sister) NoSibling NRI status generally does not qualify. Some colleges may make exceptions — verify.
Spouse YesApplicable only if the applicant is married — rarely the case for MBBS applicants.
Uncle/Aunt NoNot accepted as qualifying relation under standard NMC rules.
Student themselves (if born abroad / holds OCI) YesOCI cardholders can apply in their own right.

Eligibility rules can vary between colleges and states. Always verify the specific institution's NRI quota criteria before applying. College prospectuses and KNRUHS/KEA/state authority notifications take precedence.

What counts as NRI / OCI status?

NRI (Non-Resident Indian)

An Indian citizen who stays abroad for 182+ days in a financial year for employment, business, or other purposes. The qualifying relative must hold a valid Indian passport and valid foreign visa/work permit showing NRI status at the time of the student's admission.

OCI (Overseas Citizen of India)

A foreign national of Indian origin who holds an OCI card. OCI cardholders can apply for NRI quota in their own right. A parent or grandparent holding OCI status can also qualify their child for NRI quota.

PIO (Person of Indian Origin) — now merged into OCI

The PIO card scheme was merged into OCI in 2015. Existing PIO cardholders have been deemed OCI and their status is still valid for eligibility purposes.
